Gorillaz
D-Sides
(Virgin)
It is my feeling that you can’t really write an “album review” on a CD that isn’t an album, so this is more of an overview. D-Sides (like G-Sides before it) is the double-disc follow up to the critically acclaimed Demon Days LP and features unreleased, demo, and remix tracks from the album. Disc One contains 13 cuts that didn’t quite fit the mood of Demon Days, but stand alone as quality pieces of work spanning multiple genres. There is a heavy focus on lyrics and songwriting, which gives the feeling that we are seeing more of Damon Albarn in these songs and less of DJ Danger Mouse, who co-produced Demon Days with Albarn.
For DJ’s and electronic music enthusiasts, Disc Two reads like a who’s who list of remixers and producers from around the world. DFA, Stanton Warriors, Junior Sanchez, Soulwax, Hot Chip, and many more come together and punch out some excellent and useful re-workings of the Demon Days tracks. If you are already a fan of Gorillaz, then this is an essential (and maybe final?) piece of their catalogue. Also, check out the deluxe version of D-Sides for exclusive artwork, lapel pins, awesome packaging and much more.
