Trouble In Dreams

Anyone catch The New Pornographers on their most recent tour? If you had, you will recognize Destroyer as one Dan Bejar who fantastically contributed to both their Challengers tour and LP. A theatrical, “The State” reflects both the drama and instrumentation of a Decemberists number. The acoustic-based drive of “Dark Leaves Form a Thread” finds companionship with a Felt-like, jangly guitar before being coupled by gorgeous string arrangements that eventual overtake the song and steer it towards completion. Bejar sounds uncannily like indie-great Robyn Hitchcock fronting, say, latter-day XTC. As gorgeous and sparse as the record is, particularly the guitar and orchestral elements, it is awfully confusing as half the time you spend wondering what the hell Bejar is talking about. The lyrics and titles are too abstract in an almost trying-to-be-cool way and some theatrical moments of his singing can be a bit overwhelming and half-baked if you’re not in the mood for it. That being said, any orchestral-pop fan should find plenty to go bonkers over here as it’s well-worth the spin.
