Sloan
Parallel Play
(Yep Roc)

These Canadian power-popsters have done it again! Don’t be fooled by the Brian May-esque guitar intro of “Believe In Me” because you’ll soon be bouncing gleefully to it’s mood-lifting shuffle. It is conceivable to bring up the power-pop bands of old (namely The Beatles, Flamin’ Groovies, and The Raspberries to name a few), and sure, the bands wear their influences on their sleeves, but Sloan makes it seem as fresh as a new loaf out of the oven. It is difficult to NOT get caught up in the ba-ba-da ‘70s bubblegum vibe of the following, “Cheap Champaign.” The fiery, clap-along “Emergency 911” turns tempo up a notch with a snapping snare with plenty of fuzz and feedback. The glam blast of “Burn For It” provides oodles of sneer while “WitchesWand” is what the Bay City Rollers should have wrote had they been cool. The morning beer-buzz haze of “The Dogs” meanders along begrudgingly with lounge-y keyboards and hesitant lyrics. Please play somewhere in Arizona!!
