We Were Promised Jetpacks
These Four Walls
(Fat Cat)
Fat Cat Records is firmly stepping up as a leading label delivering quality indie-pop to the music masses. Coming out of Glasgow, Scotland, We Were Promised Jetpacks is another stellar addition to the Fat Cat roster, releasing their 11-song debut These Four Walls in June of 2009.
We Were Promised Jetpacks produce a sound highly reminiscent of New Zealand’s Cut Off Your Hands. A crystal clear vocal delivery, courtesy of Adam Thompson, and solid background vocals mesh well with a jangly guitar attack and churning rhythm section, producing an entertaining mix of guitar based indie rock and pop. Not content to just deliver the standard indie fare, We Were Promised Jetpacks understands well the theory that a well-crafted pop album can vary in tempo from song to song. Moreover, plenty of tracks vary well in terms of tempo within each song, keeping the listener at the edge of his seat waiting for the next change.
The opening "It’s Thunder and It’s Lightning" is, as one friend of mine suggested, an "epic" track, building and building throughout the song until its thunderous conclusion. The band never loses steam from then on, delivering 11 songs of true bliss. Whether the listener is in the mood for the mellow strumming of "This is My House, This is My Home", the heavy drums and guitar-laced intensity of "Short Bursts", or the chorus of "oh-oh-oh-oh" during "Quiet Little Voices", These Four Walls has a little something for everyone. "An Almighty Thud", ironic in its name, delivers an amazing end to this beautiful disc.
If this is a foreshadowing of what to expect from this band, indie rock is going to be in for a treat for years to come!
