Vampire Weekend
Contra (Bundled Version)
(XL)

There has been a lot of buzz about this band ever since they released their self-titled debut in 2008. Often times that causes this listener to shy away when so many music critics proclaim a band as the next big thing. I must say that Vampire Weekend's second album Contra has alleviated all the apprehension. This is a very good album!

Contra has the one element that I really feel is important in a disc, regardless of the genre of music. Pop hooks galore! The first listen did not immediately impress me, but repeated listens allowed this album to really grow on me.

Vampire Weekend has crafted an album that recalls some aspects of 80's new-wave in regards to the style of keyboard play. Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark is a good comparison. However, the band adds a definite indie pop style with the guitar work on Contra. The combination of these styles is utilized by several bands today. Vampire Weekend have managed to do this in an infectious way. This is an album you can dance to and crank on your stereo as well.

The guitars really intrigued me, almost reminding me of what one may hear on early work from The English Beat with the gentle picking on the guitar strings. Add in the fact that the tempo throughout Contra ebbs and flows from subdued to highly energetic allows the listener to really be treated to a good experience!

Albums that are fun and full of hooks generally are a good investment. Vampire Weekend's Contra definitely qualifies. Recommended!
