Wainwright, Martha
Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole
(Zoe)
On stage, Martha Wainwright has been know to dedicate the title track of her new EP, Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole, to her father, Loudon. Someone should try to talk the long divorced Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III into a reality show where they live together in a house somewhere in Montreal with their children Martha and Rufus Wainwright. Wait a minute, that’s The Osbournes, except all the people involved in this new series would posses real musical talent. Having a family name in the entertainment business is enough to get a brief media spotlight, but not necessarily enough to maintain it. Remember Bob Dylan’s son Jakob, John Lennon’s son Julian or Ozzy’s daughter Kelly? The media spotlight seems to be shining on Martha Wainwright. Zoe/Rounder Records has just released her first official CD, Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole or BMFA, and it’s getting a lot of press in music review sections for someone who has never released an album. Last November, two of her songs, “When The Day Is Short” and “These Flowers” were included on a soundtrack released by Koch Records for a film called p.s. She also has a small singing part in the film, The Aviator, and her song “I’ll Be Seeing You” is on that movie’s soundtrack. In January’s MOJO magazine, America’s middle of the road musical sweetheart, Norah Jones, claimed to be really into Martha, and in February Rolling Stone magazine asked the question, “The next shit-hot songwriter?” Musically speaking, does she deserve the hype? BMFA is a good EP. In seventeen minutes she covers a lot of ground. The title track and track two, “I Will Internalize” are what I would call emo-folk. Track three, “When The Day Is Short,” is catchy pop-folk. Then comes a PJ Harvey style rock song called “It’s Over.” The disk ends with a vaudeville sounding cover of “How Soon,” a popular song in the 1940’s. BMFA shows that Martha Wainwright has the talent and the chutzpah to be a great songwriter. Her songs are interesting, and her voice has a coarse yet captivating quality. The question is, does she have enough stable intent to keep the spotlight from burning out too quickly? We shall see, but for now I am content to just listen and wait for her first album to be released in April.
