This noise/drone duo from Montreal, Canada has been quite prolific in their relatively brief career. Their first two recordings for Kranky relied heavily on treated guitar. The sheer force of their guitar-centric sound is recorded for prosperity on 2005’s Live. The audience, a hand full of people, perhaps a dozen, is obviously aghast at the audacity, the gale force of their delivery.

Since that time, Growing seems to have been cast adrift as their emphasis has turned to keyboard-driven composition. From His Return through Vision Swim, Growing has explored the boundaries of electronic composition. The net effect is similar to the output of Black Dice during their Beaches and Canyons and Creature Comforts period. Placed side by side, the two would be virtually indistinguishable to the untrained ear.

Lateral, despite clocking in at just over 21 minutes, is a watershed for Growing. They have finally come full circle. The sturm und drang has returned. Recollections of acceleration and mass inform each layer. One layer is introduced, only to be forcibly subsumed by another…and another.

The song titles themselves are revealing: “Swell”, “First Contact”, “Lateral” and “Afterglow”. The highlight is “Lateral” which features undulating saw-tooth waves that sound like an oncoming train or perhaps a helicopter flying over head. Surprisingly cogent for an EP, I’m looking forward to their forthcoming full-length.
