The Dillinger Escape Plan with Mike Patton
Irony is a Dead Scene
(Epitaph Records)

The illustrious Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas) finds his newest project in a collaboration effort with the kings of metal-core, the Dillinger Escape Plan. This is a four song e.p. that is no less jaw dropping than anything either party has produced in the past. The instrumentation is hauntingly genius, and the highly technical thrash of all four songs (one being an Aphex Twin cover) is completely unforgiving. Mr. Patton and DEP punish the listener, both sonically and lyrically, with fury and quirkiness, combining the speed of DEP, with the experimentation and unique styling of Mike Patton. The fusion of these intense forces creates a masterpiece, arguably one of the best works ever to enter the Epitaph catalogue.
I would not recommend this album as a Mother's Day gift, however, I will recommend it to anyone who is a fan of either of the two, and especially to anyone who finds themselves whining the words "new music is boring." Both Mike Patton and the Dillinger Escape Plan are two of the few musical entities that continue to push buttons and boundaries alike, and the merger of the two creates some of the most chaotic, frightening, and impressive 18 minutes that you will ever experience.
