Future Pilot aka
"Tiny Waves, Mighty Sea"
(Domino)
Hands down, this record has my vote for the year's best. Sushil K. Dade has
managed to create a seamless pastiche of Scottish Pop and traditional Indian
music. One of the most amazing things about tiny waves, mighty sea is how effectively
the guests are used. Though the contributors are culled from some of Scotland's
finest and most distinctive bands, including Teenage Fanclub, the Pastels, Belle
and Sebastian, the Delgados, and Bill Wells (not to mention members of Sushil's
family and a number of Indian musicians), each song is distinctively future
pilot aka. The record is also perfectly titled, with each song having the feel
of a snippet, but lending itself to create this wonderfully subtle and expansive
piece, a mighty sea. Outstanding tracks are too many to list, but my personal
favorite is "om namah shivaya," which has Stuart Murdoch singing the
mantra repeatedly over a delightfully soft background, almost as if he were
sitting way in the back during the last song of prom singing to himself. Also
recommended are "witchi tai to," "darshan," "shree
ram, jai ram," and the wispy closer, "prayer for ananda." Definitely
a record to own, Tiny Waves, Mighty Sea, is simply stunning.
