The (International) Noise Conspiracy
A New Morning, Changing Weather
(Epitaph/Burning Heart)

While most anti-capitalist rhetoric within the punk/hardcore/indie community does not stretch past what can be found in a Sociology 101 text book or a Karl Marx for Dummies guide, the (International) Noise Conspiracy have always been at the forefront of spitting out progressive thought in a new context, and redefining its place in independent music. Dennis Lyxzén (former frontman of Refused), speaks in a way in which romantically explores the depths of revolutionary thought, and sings it with the backing of a radical 60's punk rock n roll sound. "A New Morning, Changing Weather" is the Swedish quintet's third full length, and second release in cooperation with Epitaph and Burning Heart Records. The album stands as a steady progression in both lyrical and musical content from their last release "Survival Sickness," which by itself rocked the house and boat collectively. While enlisting a handful of fill-in musicians including pianists and saxophones for the effort (to accompany the existing organs), the Conspiracy have added a new twist to their sound, and have furthered their ability to be sonically compared to the likes of the Doors, and have even swung some rhythms reminiscent of James Brown into the mix. The beats are contagious, and with quotes and suggested readings listed at the end of every song in the lyric sheet (ranging from Simone de Beauvoir, to Naom Chomsky, to Bikini Kill, and back to Marx himself), the album makes you want to dance straight to the library. The single "Capitalism stole my Virginity" initially jumps out with the catchy up-beat sound that has defined the band in the past, while other songs such as "Bigger Cages, Longer Chains" and "Breakout 2001" display the more soulful sound the band has adopted. The lyrics are as fierce as ever, and Lyxzén is even more in tune with his subversive sound. Appreciators of the Clash, Fugazi, Propagandhi, and the Kinks might find this album interesting, as well as anyone in need of something politically challenging. The (International) Noise Conspiracy is a revolution in a shrink-wrapped package. So if you find yourself in consumer distress, at yet another check out counter, in need of an escape plan, allow "A New Morning, Changing Weather" to be your new commodity of choice.
