Looper
" The Snare"
(Mute)
Stuart David pits himself against his former bandmates as far as release
dates go with his newest release as Looper. The Snare is wholly unlike Looper's
two previous records, which were smart catchy pop songs laced with quirky
electronica and cute samples. This record is very much dark, and draws far
more heavily from electronics than before. It plays like a funked up bit of
dance music with a harder edge; I half expect to see it used as the soundtrack
to some British movie about ecstasy users. Alas, the charm of Looper is gone,
and this just seems half-assed. Maybe Stuart David bought the last Bis record
and thought it was such a good idea he ought to emulate it- I don't know,
but it just isn't working. He shouldn't quit his job as a novelist I guess.
Either that or move to Ibiza. Humpf. -Dan
