Low
"Trust"
(Kranky Records)

Upon first listen to record of choice, you tend to realize one element over all of the rest that comprise a recording. My God(!) that snare sounds ridiculously like the snare on David Bowie's "Low" album. It freaks me out a little bit. I mean Low and Bowie's "Low". Is this an odd cosmic coincidence? Was it fate that placed this album at the top of my pile? Never mind, on to the guts of it. Kill the lights and plug in the headphones… you're getting sleepy… very sleepy…
"Trust" relies on the soundscapes created by the art of textures and production tweaks than anything else. Although, the harmonies provided by Gerry Beckley from America, are absolutely stunning. I kid you not; this might be the prettiest record of the year, thus far, and definitely one of Low's best efforts to date. Most of the songs on "Trust" may be mistaken, by you kids, as stoney jams, but the wiser of the masses will know better. Those savvy individuals can appreciate that "Trust" has certain similarities to their "Transmission" EP. I think it could be a soundtrack to a love story if it wanted to… or an avant garde stage performance.
I was speaking to somebody with regard to "Trust", and they asked if I was into the whole "slowcore" thing. If that is what Low's stylings are referred to, I suppose I am. But music is just music, and "Trust" is beautiful music.
