Q and not U
"Different Damage"
(Dischord)
I like the Dismemberment Plan. Everyone should. They're a great band. I
like Fugazi. Everyone should. They're a great band. Wait I've got an idea.
What if all I really ever wanted was a band from D.C. that embodied that math
rock sound and had all of the necessary elements of both the D-Plan and Fugazi?
Enter Q and not U. "No Kill No Beep Beep" was released in 2000 and
swayed a little more toward a Fugazi-type offspring, but with "Different
Damage", they add a tinge of that low key vibe, slightly scented like
more current D-Plan releases (i.e. "Change").
If you appreciate the aspects of the D.C. sound, then "Different Damage"
is one definitive record that should be in your collection. Math Rock, I assume,
is, supposedly, defined as the dissonant inflections of random time signature
changes and the altercations that take place between the melodies and the
rhythm. I love it.
For some truly innovative songs, explore the vocal delivery of the premier
track "Soft Pyramids", the Fugazi guitar flavor on "So Many
Animal Calls" reminiscent of Thirteen Songs, the D-Plan vibe that courses
through "No Damage Nocturne", and the frighteningly Beatles-esque
"Snow Patterns". "Different Damage" is truly a great offering.
