Reindeer Section
"Y'all Get Scared Now, Ya Hear!"
(PIAS)
Once again proving the dominant superiority of the Scottish Pop scene, Reindeer
Section comfortably fill the space between Belle & Sebastian and Mogwai
with their ridiculously titled debut. Though primarily the brainchild of Snow
Patrol's Gary Lightbody, Y'all Get Scared sounds exactly how you'd expect it
to sound (with guests from Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Arab Strap, Astrid,
V-Twin and other bands) and this is NOT a bad thing. Imagine the gentleness
of Belle & Sebastian, the songwriting of Snow Patrol, and the timing of
Mogwai with a bit of Tindersticks vocal delivery, now you've got the picture.
Fairly simple melodies give way to often complex arrangements and flourishes,
creating something of an aural impressionist painting. It is absolutely amazing
that such a great album was written in one day, and recorded, and mixed in just
ten. With such a great record it is hard to pick favorites, but the wonderful
"if there is I haven't found it yet," the almost dance-y "raindrop,"
and "nytol," (with vocals by Arab Strap's Aidan Moffat) come to mind.
I'd definitely recommend this to fans of any of the bands involved, but also
fans of pop music in general.
